Statement on Abortion

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church has been encouraged by the progress of the Private Member’s Bill, recently tabled in the NI Assembly by Paul Givan MLA, to limit abortions in cases on non-fatal foetal impairment. We trust it will pass through all its stages and become law.

In light of this progress in the Assembly, we are deeply alarmed and saddened by the announcement that the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland intends to introduce regulations which will allow him to direct the Department of Health to commission more widespread abortion services.

Abortion is a devolved matter and, as our Assembly and Executive are currently addressing this sensitive and emotive issue, there is surely no justification, on any grounds, for further Westminster involvement. We therefore urge the Secretary of State not to interfere but to leave decisions to our locally elected representatives.

Meanwhile, we continue to pray for all who are in authority.
